South Park Lofts, located in downtown Los Angeles, was built in 1924 as one of America's first parking structures and is one of the few parking garages listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The adaptive reuse of the former garage created 49 upscale live/work lofts in its eight story structure, ranging from 1 bedroom to 3 bedroom apartments. The Beaux Arts facade, original steel framed windows, industrial concrete structure, and brick walls were restored and underscore the historic building. Although the original elevator capable of lifting two cars at a time was dismantled, the rooftop housing for the elevator motor was converted into a rooftop gymnasium.
