This schematic exploration was the first phase of converting an existing barn/garage into a home office/studio. The client requested a bright, modern, open space with industrial steel windows with room for desks and additional space for guests.

An entry portico on the west facade was proposed to provide a physical and visual connection to the main residence, flanked by low stone walls and an outdoor patio to take advantage of the temperate climate most of the year. Clerestory windows on the south facade simultaneously allow natural light into the space while blocking the view of the adjacent neighbor's property.

Both options suggest replacing the small existing windows with larger windows and painting the existing siding a dark charcoal gray, which help to modernize the building.
