Much of this long and narrow country garden had been separated into a warren of small, gated-off sections vaguely connected by neglected and awkwardly located pathways. A master plan was drawn up to connect the entire garden including adding patios and retaining walls, reconfiguring pathways, and re-planting.
Dozens of bricks were excavated from the garden and re-laid while bricks salvaged from another project were repurposed for a patio. Much of the garden was rampantly overgrown with ivy and many plants and trees had suffered through years of drought. We discovered many diverse plant species including roses, wallflowers, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, junipers, lilies and ferns struggling to grow beneath the invasive ivy and transplanted them to more appropriate parts of the garden and propagated many others from cuttings, hence the name "Cut-and-Paste Garden".
The existing soil was amended using natural and organic methods including adding compost, chicken manure, and planting cover crops. Deer-resistant, low-water, and native plants including perennials, succulents, and evergreens were incorporated while new sub-irrigated raised beds were built to efficiently grow vegetables.
