Perched four floors above the streets of Brooklyn, this 77 s.f. (7' x 11') terrace is a lush urban oasis in the treetops.

To provide an illusion of a larger space, plants were arranged in a variety of containers at different heights and custom planters and and a worm compost bin were designed and built on top of the parapet, highlighting a massive reclaimed wood shelf salvaged from a previous project. Extra storage space for a grill, tools, and other garden essentials was built-in under the lounge chair cushion. Most of the furniture and containers were found on the street and/or re-purposed and the concept of companion planting was both a space-saver and beneficial to the plants.

Fast-growing wisteria and morning glory vines were trained to grow along the railings to provide a verdant privacy and wind screen while herbs such as mint, rosemary, oregano, shiso, sage, cilantro, and basil flourished. In addition, a variety of fruits and vegetables were organically grown in containers, including peas, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, lettuces, and watermelon.
